Cary’s
Background
My family has
been providing the Atlanta area with the best in piano
tuning and servicing for three generations.
The story
begins with my uncle, Ivan Thrift, who was born in 1925. He
learned to tune and repair pianos at the Georgia Academy for
the Blind in 1941 at the age of 16. He tuned and repaired
pianos here in Atlanta until he died in 1987. He was one of
the most respected and well-known piano technicians in
Georgia. He was also a gifted musician who enjoyed
singing and playing the piano, guitar, and harmonica.
My father, Cary
Thrift, Sr., was born in 1941. When he was ten years old, my
uncle Ivan began to teach him how to tune, repair, and
regulate pianos. My father opened his own piano store in
1973 in Decatur, when I was 12 years old. In those days, I
learned all phases of the piano business. I performed pitch
raises, chip tunings, and regular tunings in my father’s
store for six years. Finally in 1979, the same year I
graduated from high school, I ventured outside of the store
and began tuning pianos in homes, churches, and schools.
Today, over 26
years later, I continue our family’s tradition of
providing Atlanta area residents with the highest quality in
piano tuning, repairing, and rebuilding.
